This is the top of the H Oracle for the Water meter site. Each site beneath it details actual recorded meters we have and will be displaying.

Some may ask why water meters. Well they are early mechanical computers capable of recording data. They cover the fundamentals of instrumentation and allow us to talk about systems and their use in a large utility like the water board.

There is a club for activities associated with these wonderful pieces of technology. They are built using crafted engineering and a joy to see this hidden technology. There are some hidden surprises about them as well, but fundamentally, like watt meters and the like, they need a time reference (t = time). What better than a clock for this, that moves the drums, hence they plot variable against time, like barometers and other plotting instruments.

So we have the time base, what do we need to plot and why, well why not explore the pages on the system and science and find out more.

Most probably have not seen these instruments before and its hoped by exposing them to the general public the destruction of them will stop. Please don’t turn them into small turret clocks, or melt them down. They are part of the industrial heritage we have and we have a purpose for them.

Like the RACE4TIME project we wish to use them in projects to monitor environmental factors, the visual nature makes them ideal for school, college & university displays that can be used in ‘Water Watch’ and Enviro-mental displays.
